A constant battle for dominance!
After WW II U.S. and Russia were the main players at that time and were competing about who is the most powerful nation in the world. This race in time led to restless nights for many and each country took every win they could get, including being the first in space and to the moon. One event stacking upon another, one weapon more destructive than the one before – the cold war quickly escalated into almost WW III. It was, on a sidenote, famous writer George Orwell who came up with the term “Cold War” that describes this period in modern history.
In this book, Sheinkin writes with lots of capturing details about different perspectives of different important figures during this time including Nikita Khrushchev (a soviet leader) or John F. Kennedy. He describes it so accurately that you can literally sense the pressure, excitement and tenseness of this period. In the book Germany and especially Berlin is a crucial venue, including the notorious Berlin wall, which divided the city into two parts – one controlled by Russian forces and one by the US and their allies.
I totally recommend this book because it is based on real facts (unlike many newspapers at that time).
How did I like the book?
This book was super interesting as I had not spent a lot of time learning about the Cold War and having lived in Berlin before, it felt even more like walking down memory lane. The book is fantastic and I could not stop reading. Pretty much, I finished it in one go. I definitely recommend it to anyone interested in more recent history. Such a great read.
Who is this book for?
12 years and older – kids younger might have a hard time understanding and comprehending this adultlike book.
