Book Review: Slugfest by Gordon Korman

Yash, clearly one of the best athletes in the history of Robinette Middle School, faces an unexpected hurdle in graduating Middle School. He is actually such a super jock that he plays in the High School football team. And this is where the trouble starts… Yash is shocked to discover that this special assignment has left him no credit for his P.E, class, leading him to not fulfill a state-mandated request for eighth-grade and with that jeopardizing his graduation. The only solution? Summer School for Physical Education dubbed as “Slugfest.”

At Slugfest, Yash encounters several classmates, each with their own quirks and challenges and fun stories on how they ended up in summer school. Kaden, one of the smartest students in school, struggles with any physical activities. Meanwhile, the two twins Sarah and Stuart provide constant distraction over their ongoing fight. Prankster Jesse’s jokes add chaos, while Arabella’s defiance tests the limits of authority. Meanwhile Cleo who excels at every sport has sworn of any physical activity altogether due to a traumatic football injury. And their instructor, Mrs. Tamara Finnerty, seems to have no idea of physical education altogether.

After being replaced in his football team as a result of his Slugfest obligations, Yash wants to convince his old coach of being given a second chance. The coach says no and so Yash has to find another way back into the team. He decides that he and the slugs are going to play in a football tournament to impress his old coach.

Together, Yash and his ragtag team defy expectations, turning their summer of misfits into a transformative experience. With determination and resilience, they confront challenges both on the pitch and of the pitch.
