Review: The Best Bad Luck I Ever Had by Kristin Levine

When Emma Walker, the daughter of the new postmaster, came to his village Dit Sim thought this means the worst luck ever.

Dit Sim lives in a small village in Alabama around 1918. The village was very peaceful and everything was in place. When Emma and her family arrived Dit Sim was disappointed because he was hoping for a new boy to come that he can play baseball with or go fishing. But soon they became friends and after a while he thought of her as the best luck he ever had. The two had hair raising adventures. His other friends did not like that he had a black girlfriend, but he did never bother about that.

The two friends also had to deal with other problems. For example they were helping Doc who was accused for something that he did not do.

At the end there was the saddest news:  The Walkers had to leave the village. After the Walker’s train had left two new boys and their parents stepped out of the next train. Dit had to carry the boy’s luggage.  The boys kept talking and talking and Dit just stayed quiet in thoughts and already missing his friend Emma Walker.

Why did I like the book?
This book is awesome because it shows that the skin color doesn’t matter. Growing up in a very international environment myself, I have also friends with backgrounds from all over the world. It does not matter how someone looks like but if they are kind, friendly and caring.
The book was a great example of friendship and sticking together and going through things together and never alone.

Who is this book for?
This book was a recommendation of my new school in Dallas to read during the summer break between grade 3 and 4. So I would recommend this book for kids 9 years and older.
